Photographed in the American Southwest, Bryan Schutmaat's latest body of work, "Vessels," features intimate portraits of hitchhikers and highway drifters living along America's highways. Interspersed with landscapes and still lifes of a country in decline, Schutmaat offers his perspective on the ongoing story of the United States. "Amidst the ravages of environmental decline, economic dispossession, and societal neglect," says Schutmaat, "I'm struck by the extraordinary human capacity for endurance."

Opening at Galerie Wouter van Leeuwen in Amsterdam this Saturday, "Vessels," is another chapter in Schutmaat's distinctive meditations on the American West. Follow Bryan on Instagram and check out past projects on his website.
