You may not be familiar with his name but chances are you’ve seen late Bob Adelman’s work. He was at the forefront of covering the Civil Rights movement in America.

Adelman volunteered his services as a photographer to the Congress of Racial Equality, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and other civil rights organizations in the 1960s. During his lifetime, he went on to shoot the covers of many national magazines and newspapers, but at heart he always considered himself an activist.  Last week it was announced that the Library of Congress acquired Adelman’s massive photography archive. The collection was donated by an anonymous donor. The archive included 575,000 photographs, negatives, and slides. We’re hoping to see some unpublished gems from this collection in the near future for now let’s look at some of his most memorable shots.  More on the Library Congress’ acquisition of Adleman’s work here.
