“Black Cowboy” @ Studio Museum

Nov 17, 2016 - Apr 02, 2017Studio Museum, Manhattan

Amanda Hunt, associate curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, has organized the “Black Cowboy” exhibition currently on view through April 2, 2017.

The majority of American films have always depicted white men as the iconic Western Cowboy, but in colonial America, the work of cowboys was often done by enslaved men who had learned to be adept cattle herders in West Africa. During the Old West period, one-in-four American cowboys were African-American. This exhibition celebrates the black cowboys and gives us a glimpse into this thriving tradition in the African-American communities across the U.S.
