Following the path of Charles Kroehle, a pioneering nineteenth-century photographer who supposedly disappeared in the Peruvian Amazon, Arguiñe Escandón and Yann Gross's collaborative project, Aya, describes an unreal immersion into the dense jungle vegetation, structured by shamanic experiences, and developed through a process of organic photography.

Using both vintage and contemporary images, the series and book offers a dialogue on the representation of exoticism, on the imaginary of the distant and the remote. As the narrative progresses, the exploration turns into a ghostly quest, an experience in which one loses oneself.
