Appalachia From the Inside

June 05, 2014

Frustrated by the outsider views of Appalachia, photographer and West Virginia native Aaron Blum took it upon himself to show the world a more accurate representation of life in the hills through his series “Born and Raised”. By using these outsider stereotyped views and combining them with his own personal experiences within the Appalachian community and landscape, Blum creates a romanticized narrative of scenes and characters that he describes as playing “slightly exaggerated roles of themselves within sets I have constructed using their homes, furniture and objects.” In many of the images, Blum utilizes the warm light that he finds unique and distinctive to the area and sets a tone that is both nostalgic and soothing.
