Over the years, photographer and filmmaker Annie Flanagan has produced several documental photographic series. She began a project entitled Hey, Best Friend! in September of 2012, back when she resided in Syracuse, NY. This series documents the friendship of Nekqua and Brittney. Two best friends living on the South Side of Syracuse, NY.
The story captures obstacles such as sexual abuse, death, motherhood, amongst other traumas and themes seen in an earlier project by Annie entitled Love, Hannah—where Annie photographs the relationship between her and her best friend; friendship and hardship being a common theme in her work.
This past June, Annie was able to visit Brittney in her home in Antwerp, NY where she lives with Sandra, Jasmine (Sandra's 15-year-old daughter) and Jasmine's younger brother. On March 27th, 2015, Jasmine died when her home caught fire. Sandra was able to save Jasmine's 7-year-old brother and herself by breaking open a window with her bare arm.
