Aneta Bartos and the Female Gaze (nsfw)

March 09, 2017

The work of Polish born, New York-based Aneta Bartos has been a reaction to the male gaze that dominated and continues to dominate so much of art history. The result has been several projects reinterpreting that gaze and changing the dynamics between photographer and muse. From "Boy," a series of images of men performing intimate acts in dimly lit rooms of the Carlton Arms Hotel in NYC to "Spider Monkeys," inspired by the Mayan view of the animals as half human half animal sexual deviants, Bartos' photographs are an honest representation of the complexities of gender and sexuality. Her more recent work, "Family Portrait" and "Dad" feature photographs of her and her bodybuilding father.
