A look inside Danny Lyon's "The Seventh Dog" published by Phaidon

Most people are introduced to Danny Lyon’s work through his most known series Bikeriders, which is our favorite, but that’s really just the surface of his extensive body of work. Over the past 5 decades this photographer has ventured on the road through a number of cultures, immersing himself in the lives of the subjects he photographed and Phaidon has published The Seventh Dog to serve as a monograph or retrospective photo book of this endeavor. Raised in a sheltered upper-middle class, Lyon chose an untraditional path using his work for awareness and social change. Beautifully designed, The Seventh Dog starts from the photographer’s most recent work and slowly, over the course of 240 pages, moves backwards to his beginnings. The book includes original photo collages, letters and other ephemera-many published for the first time and are accompanied by Lyon’s writings which recount the personal stories behind his pictures. Stuffed full of content, give yourself a few weeks to get through this one.

From Phaidon’s website:

Danny Lyon has long been considered one of the most original and influential documentary photographers. He pioneered the style of photographic ‘New Journalism’ as he rebelled against Life magazine style photographs, instead immersing himself as a participant with his documented subjects. He produced his major bodies of work in this way: living with the Chicago outlaw motorcycle club for The Bikeriders, immersing himself in the Texas prison system for Conversations with the Dead. Since this work in the early 1960s and 1970s, Lyon has produced numerous highly collectible photobooks, mounted solo exhibitions at The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, and won two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Rockefeller Fellowship, and ten National Endowment for the Arts awards. Lyon is the father of four children and divides his time between New York State and the state of New Mexico.
