Paintings by Garth Weiser

January 25, 2012

Garth Weiser is a New York-based painter who received his MFA from Columbia. His paintings evolve from sculptural conception, sometimes beginning with a three dimensional sketch that leads to thick impasto grids and patterns on the canvas that adopts a sculptural quality itself. His painting Heavy Drinker Chews Tobacco at the current Altman Siegel show here in San Francisco caught our attention with its dizzying detail and bold use of thick paint application that remains ordered and systematic. From afar the paintings are vibrating array of color and line, but upon closer inspection the qualities of the paint emphasize the materiality of the medium reminding us that this is indeed an oil painting.
