Ugly Beauty

January 07, 2016

Oil painter Anastasia Belous represents both the beautiful and awkward of the human form. She creates both sensual paintings of women swimming alongside Koi as well as close-up faces—bruises, ruddy cheeks and all.

She says her latest paintings have a “particular accent on expressions and emotion one can arrive at through distortion of body proportions.” She recently created a series of figures twisted into yoga positions that read as studies in anatomy, proportion and perspective. Belous was born in Kiev, Ukrain, studied art history and art, but is self-taught as a painter.
