TIME LIFE: Hernan Bas Immersive Visions of Everyday Life @ Lehmann Maupin, NYC
If there was ever a name for a show of Hernan Bas's newest works, TIME LIFE seems perfectly titled. Bas can make even the most mundane of daily moments feel almost too dense to comprehend, heavy with substance but quiet in movement. Each painting is so full of layered perspectives and an action of life even if the moment is still. The size, some works over 9-feet in height or diamter, brings a vivid sense of scale and immersiveness. These new works are on view at Lehmann Maupin in NYC through January 4, 2020.
From the gallery: The works in TIME LIFE are spaces of inquisition, desire, and obsessions that invite the viewer to recognize their own curiosities and oddities, which we perhaps prefer keep to ourselves. They allow us to consider the relevance of seemingly inconsequential moments in the past and the present, and offer a space for critical reflection. As with all of Bas’ paintings over the past 20 years, the works in this exhibition navigate the liminal space between reality and fiction, the grotesque and the beautiful, the odd and the mundane.
