Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Still by San Francisco-based artist Kelly Tunstall. Returning for the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, the most recent body of paintings meditate on the quietness of the year and connection to her personal environment.
The new work explores the relationship between objects, people and experiences with a renewed sense of focus while sheltering in place with her family. Drawing influence from textiles, travel daydreams, and the world outside their windows, each piece is a rediscovery of everyday experiences. The whimsical figures and creatures that populate Tunstall’s work become one with their environment, clothing becomes furniture and sprout flowers, skin blends into the wallpaper- like backgrounds and float through the surface of the paintings.
While Tunstall has remained largely fixed in place over the course of the year, she reflects “We discover that nature does not stop, as the world slows, we discover we can grow where we are planted.” Her whimsical characters and delicately detailed environments depict small moments - neighbors moving away, paradoxes of modern communication, loss and exploration. Each painting is a snapshot or stone, Still in the moving currents of life around her.
