"Core Pop" is the name of artist Yu Maeda's website, and it seems fitting. Colorful innards "popping" out of skulls; it's visceral and explosive. Yet, his work doesn't fit the "dark art" genre.

Maeda's paintings are more psychedelic: bright colors with the intricacy of a Tibetan Buddhist mandala. Since coming here from Kumamoto Japan in 2014, Maeda has been showing at such LA staples as Giant Robot and Superchief gallery. You may have also seen his animated bumpers on Adult Swim and Japan's NHK channel. Experience more Yu Maeda on instagram and the web. —Sam Graham
