It was almost jostling to see the embrace, to see two characters in physical contact after the year we had was stopped us in our tracks. Dutch painter Martine Johanna has painted these strong woman for years, stoic and poised, often looking off into the distance to create an even more mysterious character study. That "introspection and complexity" is on display this month as Johanna is set to open The Dark House of Gloria at Hashimoto Contemporary.

As the gallery notes, "The fictitious environment of The Dark House of Gloria the artist has created is a place 'where an uncontrollable amount of love and optimism collides with the harsh light of life experiences and its destructive effects.' Each of Johanna’s figures ricochet among opposing emotions—escapism and stasis, ferocity and vulnerability, intensity and tenderness."
