One of the exhibitions we've enjoyed in recent months but somehow didn't get around to feature while it was on view was Simphiwe Ndzube's presentation of new works on paper which ran through October 17, 2020 at Stevenson's Amsterdam space. This was the artist's second solo presentation with the South African gallery, following a successful Cape Town debut, Uncharted Lands and Trackless Seas, in 2019.
The painter and author of Queen of the all-seeing eyes under the water , another great title, ups the action with a mix of acrylics, spray paint, graphite and oil pastel, bolstered with collage and the application of various materials. Working from his refashioned studio at home during lockdown, Ndzube explains, "These studies, which signify a return to basics and an emphasis on the human subject, allow me to really get to know my characters: their evolution, depths, and physicality." As the Mine Moon folk, dressed in reflective urban apparel, mine reality through fantasy, their stories are Yours and Mine. —Sasha Bogojev
