We know from his website that, "DALeast is currently a human being." Instagram and a resume of work spanning almost a decade confirm this, but there is so much more. The Chinese-born, Berlin-based artist paints, draws, sculpts, and performs while traveling the globe, and for his first solo show on the east coast in over five years, DALeast visits Hashimoto Contemporary NYC, where he presents a series of work inspired by his nomadic life.
“I had a vision of a stream in the mountains that travels through different regions. Sometimes it crashes and merges with rocks, and sometimes it rests in the stillness, moving very slowly. A falling stone causes a rippling pattern, that pattern reflects, then it becomes indistinct whether the stream or the stone is rippling. The show represents a moment, so all the work echoes with this idea.”–DALeast
Rippling Stone reflects DALeast's travels while maintaining his signature fluid, organic line with acrylic paint and ink. Sinuous creatures creep across the plane and leap from the paper! A firey cheetah chases, a stalking lioness prowls, or an eagle soars!
In addition to works on canvas, DALeast will exhibit a series of ink and watercolor pieces, spewing a frenetic sense of energy portraying figures that rise from that very energy. Animal figures, seemingly mechanical unravel yet merge at the same time. Neither from our universe nor the past or future, they capture a sense of time rendered just as it vanishes.
Rippling Stone opens this Saturday, November 2, 2019, with an opening reception from 6 to 8 pm, and is on view through November 23, 2019.
In conjunction, Hashimoto Contemporary NYC will release a limited edition HPM screen print of Asteroid RS (above), available exclusively in person at the opening.
