This weekend CARVALHO PARK opens in Brooklyn for the New York debut of London-based artist Yulia Iosilzon, in the show titled Paradeisos. The exhibit, curated by Kate Mothes founder of Young Space, opens October 25th, with an opening reception from 6 to 9 pm, and is on view until November 24.

The Moscow-born Israeli artist embarks on an exploration of the occasionally dubious and uneven terrain of memory, imagination, relationships and nature. Joyful and dreamlike idylls belie sinister whispers from the past. Playful birds dart amongst rich foliage where figures play hide and seek. Faces lurk in shrubbery or pour down a shower spout, alluding to a childhood memory of the uncertain and mysterious things that hover just out of sight. What could be hiding in those snaking pipes? Why not join the journey and traverse a land resplendent with luscious blooms, draping fronds, and divine birds.

Vivid pinks, oranges, greens, and yellows paired with contrasting charcoal grey turn the focus to the materiality of the work. Iosilzon’s choice of delicate synthetic silk, as well as a sturdy cotton canvas, expands the dialogue of presence and absence, visibility and opacity. With brushstrokes are fast and deliberate, she deftly reveals and conceals figures in a swirl de foliage, water, and other forms, sweetened with glittery silicone and ceramic. Faces appear expectedly, reflecting the human inclination to see reflections. What tricks memory and imagination can play!
