Pain Beneath Perfection

December 14, 2015

Kwon Kyung-yup’s paitings portray an aesthetically muted world, the color palate intentionally restricted. Her subjects are portrayed almost as saints or spirits, their bodies nearly perfect, but many are steeped in disturbing emotions.

These perfect bodies are on the verge of tears or have bloodshot eyes, bandages, or eye-patches. The wounds conjure the fragility of humans and the pain and loneliness inherent in the human experience. Kyung-yup will be in a show during the upcoming year at Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles.
