November 2017 Juxtapoz Cover Artist, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Opens "To Wander Determined" @ Whitney Museum, NYC
The Nigerian-born, NYC-based painter, Toyin Ojih Odutola, caps off a brilliant few year run of exhibitions and paintings with her first NYC solo museum show at the hallowed halls of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her solo show, To Wander Determined, will be on view through February 25, 2018.
We have spent this past month talking about the great works of Odutola, with her work being featured as the cover story in our November 2017 print edition of Juxtapoz. As the museum notes, "For her first solo museum exhibition in New York, Toyin Ojih Odutola presents an interconnected series of fictional portraits, chronicling the lives of two aristocratic Nigerian families."
When we asked Toyin this month about her unique stlye when it comes to painting skin, she told us, "The style I employ was my way of questioning that surface and seeing the ways I could expand on it. Since then, the investigation has evolved to tackle how the skin can be placed within a composition, how it it works within a larger system on a picture plane and, by extension, how the skin is placed in a public forum. I generally work from a formalist lens, playing with the way surfaces influence our perceptions of things, of people, of places; but I am also interested in the conceptual inclinations associated with skin, with the figure, with a subject’s surroundings—the spaces characters may or may not inhabit outside of their person."
