Mrs. is pleased to announce a solo presentation of new works by Mark Mulroney. This exhibition was originally slated to be held on Governors Island with NADA House. Due to the pandemic, however, we have now moved the exhibition to our brick and mortar gallery space. This is Mulroney’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
In contrast to Mulroney’s more humorous narratives which often include such playful references as comic book characters and cutouts from Playboy magazines; for this exhibition the artist takes a more somber tone. Mulroney’s new series of carefully painted graphic portraits takes hold of the collective emotional experience of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With abject undertones, these Picasso-esque portraits painted on colored duck cloth fabric, emote chaos, anxiety, isolation and loss. All congruent sizes and simply displayed atop a geometric mural of greens and yellow, they portray characters with crewcuts and haunting direct gazes. Considering the profound and growing loss that the pandemic and its gross mismanagement has brought our country, these works resonate. This presentation represents a quieter moment for Mulroney’s practice.
Mark Mulroney received a BFA from San Diego State University and an MFA in Studio Arts from University of California at Santa Barbara. Currently, Mulroney lives and works in North Haven, CT. Recent exhibitions include Ampersand Gallery, Portland, OR; CG2 Gallery, TN; Mixed Greens and Joshua Liner Gallery, New York, and Mrs., Maspeth, NY; Ever Gold and Park Life, San Francisco; Left Field, San Luis Obispo; Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Santa Monica; and Slow Culture, Los Angeles, CA. Mulroney recently attended a residency at The Tamarind Institute at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM. His work is included in Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, The West Family Collection and the The Progressive Collection.
