New York City's Hashimoto Contemporary presents Tangle, a solo exhibition by Oakland-based artist Jeffrey Cheung. For his third solo show with the gallery, Cheung applies bold strokes and colors to create nude figures illustrating queerness and intersectionality.
Cheung celebrates body-positivity and themes of queer love and identity in figures who refuse to adhere to gender roles and societal expectations, re-contextualizing normative notions of gender.
While spending time at the Bed-Stuy Art Residency in Brooklyn, Cheung focused primarily on oil pastels and drawings, honing techniques of line making and abstraction to create figures nudge and intertwine, emerging as organic shapes of joyful entanglement. Writhing, repetitive figures merge fluidly, delighting in positivity and acceptance, visual reminders that we are all one. With his semi-abstracted, guilelessly rendered figures, exuberant, playful, and full of life, Cheung illustrates an empowering representation of human connection.
Jeffrey Cheung's Tangle opens at Hashimoto Contemporary NYC on September 7th, with an opening reception from 6 to 8 pm, the ad is on view through September 28, 2019. In addition to the show, Hashimoto Contemporary will host a Unity pop-up for the duration of Tangle, selling skateboard decks, apparel and additional merchandise. Unity is a project co-founded by Jeffrey Cheung, which aims to represent, support and create a safe place for queer skaters.
