After a couple of years on maternity break, Deedee Cheriel will be presenting her latest body of work at KP Projects from October 6th to 27th. Cosmic Connections features her most recent spiritual compositions that reference East Indian ritual art using her trademark hybrid animal-people as subjects.
Deedee Cheriel's dynamic and rich life experience has been the main source of inspiration for her work since entering the art world as a teenager. She started with designing T-shirts and record covers for the early 90's Oregon music scene, played in several bands, founded her own record label, co-created the semi-autobiographical film Down and Out With Dolls, and lived and exhibited in many countries, including Denmark, Honduras, Chile, England,
Portugal, Spain, and India.
After big changes in her private life in recent years, the LA-based artist introduces her arguably strongest body of work that explores themes of illusions of separations, ego, humility, forgiveness, truth, passages, connectedness, enlightenment, and new beginnings. Using countless metaphors and references to East Indian ritual art, the works are reminiscent of everything from tarot cards and 1920’s political art, to Alchemy manuals. Incorporating familiar elements and imagery from her earlier work, such as signature hybrid characters, vibrant patterns and simplified perspective or space depictions, the new works stand out with their strong narrative. Imbued with complex emotions and intense colors, these images also represent a commentary on personal relationships or human’s interaction with nature and the environment.
