Kallenbach Gallery in Amsterdam is currently hosting their 3rd solo show with Jaybo Monk, who is showing along with renowned American artist, Dave Kinsey. For their joined exhibition in The Netherlands, both artists decided to take inspiration from the life and work of Vincent van Gogh. The exhibiton is titled, perfectly, Van Gogh Ate My Dog.
Paying tribute to one of the Holland's greatest, the artists either re-created their takes on his famous works or subject matters, or created new pieces that are directly inspired by the Dutch Master’s infamous tribulations and his posthumous fame. One of such work is Kiney's take on Van Gogh's iconic "Sunflowers" in which the flowers aren't the main subject and have undergone through his unmistakable artistic "treatment". Placed within Kiney's surrealist landscapes and painted using signature color palette that the LA artist has become famous for, they are effective contemporary takes on some of the most iconic classic art imagery. On other hand, Jaybo Monk extracted the elements from the infamous self portraits by the troubled artist for his abstract compositions, as well as created a conceptual sculpture piece. Titled "Pile of Insanity" the piece is consisting of 40 ceramic ears, each labeled with the name of artists that became famous after Van Gogh’s death. —Sasha Bogojev
