Toronto's Project Gallery is currently hosting Energy, latest exhibit by abstract artist Callen Schaub. The works on view are produced using his innovative painting techniques that include custom spin machines, swinging troughs and pendulums.
The result of Schaub's unconventional process methods are vibrant and energetic pieces based on the movement of paint. By freezing this semi-controlled movement, the artist is capturing the energy that stays trapped within colors and formats of the piece. His unorthodox methods allow him to control only some part of the process, leaving a big part of the final result to the sheer chance or random factors. With his performances and process videos becoming viral, the artist got a strong feedback online and aims to encourage his audiences to use words and art to empower others. Along with canvases of different formats and shapes, the show includes couple of globe-shaped sculptural pieces that represent the interconnection of digital age and far reaching effect of his art. —Sasha Bogojev
