What first attracted us to the work ofNew York City born and based painter Bianca Nemelc was an aura of mystery.  Who are these cryptic characters? Where are they?  What era do they inhabit? Brown bodies and tropical settings create a dreamily  hypnagogic feeling,  even though   the work cannot be described as surreal.  The body is the focus, the marks bold and intentional, with generous slices of color framing Nemelc's characters, who inhabit where you might want to be. As Nemeic has explained, the aim in painting her women is to “highlight the beautiful and symbiotic relationship between nature and the female body.” Solitary and possibly stranded, they are exactly where they want to be.

From October 16 throughNovember 28, 2020, Cheryl Hazen Gallery will host Bianca Nemelc's newest body of work, As It Ripens, by appointment at their NYC space. This collection feels like Nemelc's most bold works to date, minimal but abundant with life and freedom. Like Geoff McFetridge, Nemelc wields a mastery of color and balance; nothing is wasted and each hue produces her intended shade of emotion. In work that is  larger in scale, the bodies command even more attention, and as her output continues to grow, Bianca Nemeic is rightfully commanding more attention in the contemporary art world. —Evan Pricco
