Purple as an Inexplicable Poetic Force
<\/strong><\/span>Robert Williams: <\/em>It is not my intention to take every color in the color wheel and extol metaphysical significance to each hue. Nor is it justifiable to invoke the laws of physics with regards to scientific observations of the prismatic spectrum. However, colors do have personalities. Ultraviolet does solicit emotion, while red creates agitation, green offers pastoral repose, blue suggests lonely reflection and yellow evokes surprise. Violet, on the other hand, goes a couple emotions further. Like metaphorically rubbing sugar in one\u2019s eyes, purple can be nauseatingly sappy. On the other hand, mauves and violets used in moderation with contrasting color, can be powerful and dramatic.<\/p>\r\n

As a test of memory for the artist, I have brought back a persisting visual obsession I\u2019ve pondered for 45 years\u2014the images of a sultry young girl I chanced across the summer of 1970. Not as a sexual fixation, but as a point of Freudian reference for the color mauve, now a wispy ghost faintly imprinted on the walls of my libido, just like a long-ago smudged fingerprint on a brothel bedpost. Once, just a gossamer specter dressed in lavender, not either a doting grandmother or simply deceased.<\/p>\r\n

Brenda and Fluffy's FIrst Caveat on the Road to Damnation
<\/strong><\/span>If this painting was a parable, we would be witnessing a soon-to-occur young girl\u2019s encounter with the devil and his tested abilities to corrupt the incorruptible. Or, if it was a symbolic metaphor, this would represent the turning point in everyone\u2019s life when one sees dangerous signs that suggest reversing one\u2019s course. But, unfortunately, there is a more fundamental intention to this picture. As with many of these paintings, for the art observer, the innocent participant, in this case, the school girl, is the vicarious entr\u00e9e point to the work. Consequently, any aberrations or anomalies detected would place the moral realization at the hands of the onlooker. All inequities aside, the artists declares his action in creating this work as indeterminately uncritiqueable and wishes the observer to respect his lyrical subjectivity (artistic license).<\/p>\r\n

His poetic responsibility is in how long he can deepen the art patron investigatively engaged. Accepting further culpability for this work would be asking for more than this painting narratively offers.<\/p>\r\n

<\/strong><\/span>The painting reveals a child\u2019s liberated spirit gravitating to his most desired passions in life\u2014double cheese half-pounder with spicy fries and super soda. In ghostly form, the young fellow hangs in middle ground between damnation and hereafter\u2014waiting for judgment of the worthiness of his soul. The levitating apparition of the burger combo hides insidious instigators, a pack of demonic profligates, satanic cretins laying in wait to sway the innocent child\u2019s weaknesses.<\/p>\r\n

Implications here are far more extenuated. Obviously, fast food is not itself antisocial, and his age would indicate the deceased could not have spent a lifetime eating greasy foods long enough to kill him. Seen from an ecumenical level, the connotation that burgers and fries are not permitted through the portals of kingdom-come makes heaven rather uninviting. This oil painting\u2019s excessive melodrama creates a false pathos. Following the acclaimed retrospective of the artist at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the exhibition features a selection from his remarkably varied body of work spanning over 45 years and ranging from series in black and white that originated in the 1970s and -80s to recent large-scale color photographs.

The social landscape in an urban environment is the focus of Anthony Hernandez\u2019s photography, which is united by its formal aesthetics. Born in Los Angeles in 1947, Hernandez begins photographing everyday life in his native city in the 1970s, acknowledging its implied cultural differences of class and race. Waiting, Sitting, Fishing and Some Automobiles<\/i> (Los Angeles, 1978-1982) is the title of one of his most important early works, a series of 42 black and white photographs that depict people waiting at bus stops, people lunching or sitting in public spaces, people at public fishing areas, and automobile repair shops \u2013 a panorama of the ordinariness of working class life. Hernandez applies the formal approach of landscape photography to the streets of Los Angeles, creating detailed compositions of a depth that gives room to socio-political nuances. The normality of the subjects chosen by the artist counteracts the glamorous myth of the metropolis. In his early sequence LA 1971<\/i> Hernandez again documents the routines of the urbanites. Positioning his camera in front of a diner\u2019s door he photographs the leaving guests one by one.<\/p>\r\n

Robert Mann Gallery is currently showcasing new works by Rankaitis in the exhibition Grey Matters. <\/em>Although her work is continually evolving, Grey Matters <\/em>is the most recent intersection of the artist\u2019s ongoing exploration of artistic and scientific processes. <\/p>\r\n

Taking her lead from the innovative L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Moholy-Nagy, Rankaitis\u2019s work is rooted in the unconventional. This exhibition is comprised of unique images that meld the histories of experimental photography and abstract painting to create an artistic visual representation of scientific ideas. The work from the Grey Matters<\/em> series is derived in part from Rankaitis\u2019s most recent fascination with the concept of interoception. This obscure internal sense is in essence a physiological intuition, a process in which the body responds to needs before the deficit is mentally registered. In an effort to illustrate an intangible internal event such as interoception, or even the synapses of neurons, Rankaitis has engaged the use of mixed media to create images that are both cerebral and emotionally evocative. <\/p>\r\n

Art Historian Barbara Maria Stafford has commented on the field of scientific art as being \u201cthe problem of how art makes visible the invisible.\u201d The work of Susan Rankaitis, having been shaped, deconstructed and reformed by years of study in order to depict an unseen function, perfectly captures Stafford\u2019s words. Her synthesis of artistic styles and scientific innovations has driven her both conceptually and technically in the art making process, resulting in works that are as challenging as they are striking.<\/p>\r\n

\"Sometimes it can seem like police violence against unarmed black Americans is a problem on the rise in our country. When actually it has only become more visible. There is some evidence in fact, that the public outcry has had an impact on the problem and that 2016 saw fewer of these incidents than 2015. In recent months however, since the election of our new president, this particular issue has receded from view to some degree but the problem persists and it is extremely serious. I have never experienced this particular kind of loss but I did lose my father and later a brother, both to complicated and troubling violence, so I can empathize to some degree. My heart hurts every time I learn of these horrible events.
