Masking vintage pornography, Justin Beachler utilizes a concept that may reference a Rothko-esque concept, but any similarity stops there. Blocking most of an already existing image breathes new life into the form by addressing taboos without overt referencing. It isn’t what is hidden from view, but what is now re-imagined. Using gesso and acrylic on these found images Baechlers’ compositions imparts a bawdy patina of glossy erotica that encourages the viewer to look closely and develop their own internal imagery. The idea to sublimate sexuality in an era of encroaching pseudo-political morality is a perfect dance of pleasure and shame.
Beachler's work focuses on a direct Minimalist concept that incorporates advertising for erotica and pornography. His use of subliminal sexuality seems altogether perfect for a society that wants sex, but is often scared to own up to it.
