Cecily Brown's "Untitled" (2012), now on display in the Gagosian Gallery, examines the subject of the nude ensemble, drawing at the same time from history painting and pop culture. In fleshy yet chromatically sober color pairings, Brown creates clusters of diverse and invidiuated nudes that begin to crowd the painted scene as if from some unnamed purgatory. Fragmented figures and faces dissolve into kaleidoscopic concentrations of grey, purple and sienna. These paintings play out Brown's persistent fascination with the tension between bold painterly gesture and figurative content.
