Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime Presented by Mana Contemporary and Ace Hotel Chicago
In partnership with Ace Hotel Chicago, Mana Contemporary opened Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime this past weekend, a performative installation of a fictional thrift store by artist Azikiwe Mohammed. New Davonhaime—a location conceived by Mohammed—is an amalgamation of the names of the most densely populated Black cities in America: New Orleans, Detroit, Jackson, Birmingham, and Savannah. Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime serves as a safe space for Black and Brown people living in America.
“The Ace Hotel is a really dope home for Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime, and to be able to hang out for a few months is a pleasure and an honor,” says Mohammed. “Chicago is an epic city with an incredible amount of history. I hope both locals and visitors will be able to enjoy the comfort, safety, and community that are at the core of New Davonhaime.” Through September 30, Ace Hotel Chicago’s gallery space will be transformed into a thrift store installation containing objects both created and found by Mohammed. Visitors will also find traces of Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime throughout the hotel, including custom Spotify playlists, New Davonhaime merchandise in the Ace Hotel Store, and themed beverage collaborations developed by Ace Hotel with Mohammed for the run of the exhibition. $1 from each beverage purchase will be donated to 826CHI, a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing center in Chicago.
Mohammed will be on site for the closing of the exhibition. Performing as thrift store owner Jimmy, Mohammed will open critical conversations, opportunities to collaborate on a digital music sharing project using New Davonhaime USB drives, and accept donations from the public in the form of photographs to be added to Mohammed’s Black Community Family Albums. These archives show an intimate and nuanced portrait of Black lives, both present and past.
Previous versions of Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime have shown at SPRING/BREAK Art Show, No Longer Empty, Knockdown Center, and Mana Contemporary Miami. Mana Contemporary and Ace Hotel Chicago’s presentation of Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime will be its most extensive iteration yet.
