It's always the right time for a night of skateboarding and art, so the adidas Showcase will visit Minneapolis this Friday, July 26th. Located at the CO Exhibitions gallery space at 1101 Stinson Blvd, the latest stop is hosted by Mike Munzenrider, with music provided by DJ Rowsheen and a live performance by Lockgnar. Let's meet the artists.
Bella Culhane
Influenced by folk arts, tattoo flash, motherhood, the tarot and magic, Bella Culhane is a full-time multidisciplinary artist who works in watercolor and ink while also practicing knitting, quilting, and embroidery.
Trinity Alexander
"Through various mediums, my work aims to bring narratives that provide doorways to reflection, healing, and reconnection."
Aaron Christensen
"Skateboarding and art were my central focuses growing up, so a lot of my work is inspired by skateboarding, my friends, and personal life experiences. I owe a lot to skateboarding. Without it, I would lose my sanity!"
Nina Keim
As a graphic artist and apparel designer raised in Minneapolis and currently living in LA, Nina Keim is the owner and art director of Closing Hours, a menswear-inspired clothing line featuring gender-neutral pieces and illustrative products for women.
David Jaimes
"With influences coming from the skateboard-art world, I admire what artists like Mark Mckee, Todd Bratrud, Sean Cliver, Don Pendleton, Evan Hecox, and Andy Jenkins have contributed to skateboarding. Each artist possesses a unique style and has drawn board series with iconic graphics that stand the test of time, like Andy Jenkins' Basketball Series, Sean Cliver's Last Super, and any of Evan Hecox's car series. In addition to looking at skateboard graphics, I get excited studying work from fine artists like Stuart Davis, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein, and Wassily Kandinsky. There are concepts and illustration techniques still to learn from looking at the work of these greats. Lately, I've been studying a ton of work from small design studios. Work that is produced from places like Duffy, Werner Design Werks, Cue, Eight Hour Day, Studio MPLS, Helms Workshop, Carpenter Collective, Pentagram, Sagmeister & Walsh, Young Jerks, and Farm Design are what get me the most excited."
Joshua Manoles
As a visual artist from Minneapolis, Joshua Manoles enjoys working in different mediums, combining ancient and modern forms of art to create visual experiments.
Nick Dahlen
While modern influences live on in his bold mark-making and clever spontaneity, Nick Dahlen's striking originality is evident in scenes chosen and lines used to compose them. Each piece is the structured recollection of an idea that maintains a malleable, dream-like quality. Dahlen creates empathetically with his environment, evoking nostalgia for the daily. He hopes to help others translate complexities into a simple structure at any moment. To witness the beauty of how we occupy space, existing in perfect contrast to whatever comes our way.
