IN L.A.: Black Moon @ Sloan Fine Art

November 06, 2013

This past weekend we were invited to attended the opening reception of Black Moon, a very special two-day exhibition at Sloan Fine Art featuring new works by four amazingly talented Los Angeles based artists, Jessicka Addams, Camille Rose Garcia, Elizabeth McGrath, and Marion Peck.

“What happens when five dear friends – four brilliant fine artists (one of whom is also a member of the band Scarling.) and one passionate New York gallerist – get together in a Los Angeles photo studio to celebrate art, music, friendship and everyone’s favorite time of year?

“Black Moon” is a two-day only exhibition featuring all new works by California based artists Jessicka Addams, Camille Rose Garcia, Elizabeth McGrath and Marion Peck. In addition to new paintings and sculpture, a curated selection of merchandise from the artists including books, prints and other surprises will be available. And as an extra special Fall time treat, Jessicka Addams’ band Scarling. will have copies of their soon to be released 7 inch “Who Wants to Die for Art,” featuring covers by Addams, Garcia and Peck, for sale.

Self-taught artist Jessicka Addams was the founding member and singer for such seminal indie rock bands as Jack Off Jill and Scarling. As resident curator and researcher at the Dark Dark Science project, she explores the relationship between fine art and music with a continuing goal of creating her own work while gaining an understanding of the processes of others. Addams’ personal artwork has been displayed throughout the United States and featured in numerous magazines.

Camille Rose Garcia‘s work has been displayed internationally and is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Resnick Collection and the San Jose Museum of Art, which held a retrospective of her work, entitled “Tragic Kingdom.” Garcia’s recent book, “The Illustrated Alice in Wonderland” (published by Harper Collins), was a New York Times Bestseller. She is represented by, and including in this exhibition courtesy of, Michael Kohn Gallery.

Longtime downtown LA resident Elizabeth McGrath is well known for creating wildly intricate paintings and sculptures that celebrate the natural world while drawing attention to our responsibility as humans to preserve it. She has been exhibited worldwide including recent inclusion in the “HEY! Modern Art and Pop Culture” exhibition at the Halle Saint Pierre in Paris. “Incurable Disorder,” McGrath’s second fine art monograph with introductions by Morgan Spurlock and Alix Sloan, was released by Last Gasp in September and will be available at the exhibition.

Marion Peck grew up in Seattle before heading east to earn a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design. She went on to study in two different MFA programs (Syracuse University in New York and Temple University in Rome) and has traveled the globe absorbing culture and studying art. Peck’s intricate paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including two solo exhibitions with Sloan Fine Art. She currently resides in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Alix Sloan, owner of Sloan Fine Art, worked with several artists and galleries over the years, including five years at the legendary La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, before opening Sloan Fine Art in New York in 2005. Since 2011, she has been mounting alternative and pop up exhibitions under the Sloan Fine Art banner all over the country. Also a fiction and arts writer, Sloan wrote the introduction to Elizabeth McGrath’s new book, “Incurable Disorder."

We hope you enjoy the photos from the opening reception.
