XMAU's Futuristic Hip-Hop Techno Gangsters
"XMAU" is an Argentina-based 2D illustrator and animator whose work combines urban motocross/hip hop/b-boy culture with traditional asian ghost symbology.
XMAU's characters are a sweet smash-up between Jamie Hewlett's "Gorillaz" characters and a much darker, devilish kind of Japanese-themed dragon crew. Their jackets are peppered with patches boasting street-wear labels and Japanese lettering, ostensibly from both the future and the 90's. Purple-haired girls sling vinyl and roll their own cigarettes. The result is a funky twist-up of a biker crew; the kind who'd probably swoop you away into the streets of a distopian Tokyo where you'd have to battle sewer dragons on your moto. We're down.
