The modern circus, as we think of it today, was originated by Philip Astley in Britain in 1768. It was the first time a show included horse riding tricks, acrobats, music and clowns in the same venue. These wonderful vintage posters are from the Cirucs Museum in the Netherlands and feature cats, camels, kangaroos, and even a woman in ice.
