Barcelona-based Elisa Ancori demonstrates her obsession with the sea with an intricate visual exploration of humans entering into it. Her characters are part koi or jellyfish or lionfish, sometimes caught in the awkward, in-between of metamorphosis.

The juxtaposition of human forms and the rough, scaly shapes of sea creatures creates a tension that she sometimes enhances by exposing the insides of her subjects’ bodies. Some of the portraits, though, offer a sensual, seamless blend of her own line work and the sinewy lines of sea creatures.
