20-year-old artist Katia Pontillo creates striking portraits of friends and family members, rendered in an impressively hyperrealistic style.
Art has always been a creative outlet, a way to process emotion and experience and better understand ourselves and those around us. Having lost her mother at a young age, Pontillo's portraits help her process the loss and commemorate their relationship. Her mother was an accomplished and beloved musician, and creativity runs in the family. Katia works in pencil, charcoal, intaglio printmaking and screen-printing, sometimes isolating parts of the figure, such as hair, to further study what it conveys about identity. We'll be keeping our eye on this emerging artist.
