Francis Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" goes for a minor $142.4m at Christie's

November 13, 2013

Remember, it was a set of 3. A record was set Tuesday night, when late British painter Francis Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" was sold for a whopping $142.4 million at Christie's in NYC, breaking the world record for the most expensive piece of art ever auctioned. Bacon's previous record was $86m, but a work this intimate, painted 25 years after the two artists met, seems to have garnered a little bit more attention from the billionaire set. The piece was painted in 1969.
