It seems like, once again, sharing this documentary on Emory Douglas and the Black Panthers is too relevant. In so many ways, we wish we could share this footage as a historical document, not something we are once again reliving, but here we are, George Floyd on our minds, thinking about what Douglas's images meant to the Black Power Movement and continue to mean today.
In 2015, when we first posted this film, we wrote, "In February 2011, we ran a special cover story on one of the most influential and renowned political poster artists in the United States, former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party, Emory Douglas. Through archival footage and conversations with Emory, this new short documentary by Dress Code shares his story, alongside the rise and fall of the Panthers. He used his art as a weapon in the Black Panther Party’s struggle for civil rights and today Emory continues to give a voice to the voiceless. His art and what The Panthers fought for are still as relevant as ever."
