Feature: Dabs Myla In Conversation with Ephameron

August 23, 2012

Dabs Myla's big 'Marvelous Expeditions' show is coming up on Sat, Sept. 1st at Thinkspace. The duo have put together a fun lil' set of questions combining some of the favorite questions they've been asked over the past few years as well as a few show specific travel related questions to spice things up. Today, they speak with Ephameron.

This special exhibit will feature over 20 new works from Dabs Myla, a huge installation with a very special guest artist helping out (details to follow) and a group show they have curated featuring 32 of their friends all creating works on 16x20 cradled wood panels provided by the duo and built by Craola's dad George Simkins.

Thinkspace is pleased to present the highly anticipated 'Marvelous Expeditions' by Dabs Myla and Friends. In the spirit of travel and all things wonderfully itinerant, acclaimed duo Dabs Myla will take over the gallery space and will feature new work and an installation alongside curated selections from 30 of their closest and most inspiring artist friends. The gallery will in effect become a locus of meeting and communal exchange, as artists from all over the world are brought together by Dabs Myla to share their experiences of traveling through its landscapes.

'Marvelous Expeditions' showcases the duo’s love of friends, collegiality, exchange, and the proliferation of vision and variety that thrives alongside constant movement and displacement. These are the exploratory impulses of travel that lead to constant revisions, reconstitutions, influences, and to the indelible encounters that change everything.

Featuring 16x20 works from:

Last time you traveled? To where?

My last long haul was to South Africa over Easter, where I went on a road trip around the Western Cape with some friends and compiled our results into an exhibition at Stellenbosch University. It was an amazing time and seeing that part of the country was truly awesome. I hope to go back next year to document the Eastern Cape.

Favorite country / city you've visited? Place you most want to visit?

I've discovered I like second-biggest cities in countries most. Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Melbourne, Cape Town, Antwerp,... Whenever I'm home for over a month the travel bug starts to itch again. I love to be able to leave my daily responsibilities behind and see new things, meet people, be inspired to create new works.

I would still love to visit Japan, India and Venezuela!

Planes, Trains or Automobiles?

They all have their own disadvantages and charms! I do get motion sickness so I would have to choose trains, also because in every country the public transportation system is different and I like learning about them. Is that weird?

Window seat or isle? Chicken or Fish?

Window seat with my husband next to me, and a vegetarian meal on our laps.

What is your favorite road trip song / artist or album?

I'm currently still a learner driver - I know, I'm very late in life to be doing this - so I never play music because I need to focus... When someone else is driving, I could turn the volume up real loud on Akron Family's "Love is Simple" album and sing along.

What fuels you to keep creating?

Love, family and friends are my biggest inspirations. Daily life and its small moments. Seeing unusual buildings, wooden houses, other people's art. Travelling, of course. Reading novels. Things falling apart.

Please describe your dream project if time and money were not issues.

Travelling the world for a year, then publishing my illustrated diaries.

Do you have a favorite item from your studio that you always make sure you take on a trip? For example...reference book, lucky balaclava, favorite brush etc..

My bone folder. I only ever use it to score covers when I publish a zine, but I love it because of its redundancy. I also have a whittler that I hardly ever use but which intrigues me extremely. I think I'm a sucker for the unused.

Least favorite part of making art? And your favorite part...

I'm not so fond of dealing with the business side of the job: answering emails in particular is not my favourite task of the day. But once that's out of the way, I'm free to do whatever I want, where and when I want - who could ask for more?

If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be?

Léon Spilliaert was an amazing Flemish painter. I get mesmerized by his use of light and shadow.

Ever picked up a hitch hiker?... Have you ever been a hitchhiker?

I've never picked one up myself, but I did it a fair bit when I was a teenager, to get to remote places for concerts.

Something you wish you would have known 5 years ago?

Everything will be alright.
