Darwin Was a Baller: Converse Custom x Grotesk & Installation (video)
Two-time Juxtapoz cover artist Kimou "Grotesk" Meyer has recently built out the ground floor of the Converse Soho store into an immersive installation, "Darwin Was a Baller," to celebrate the launch of his limited edition materials currently featured at the Converse Blank Canvas Workshop. On March 16th, Converse will also host an open meet and greet event with the artist at the Converse Soho store (560 Broadway), including a conversation with Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Space is limited, so get there early!
First things first for the sneakerheads and collectors, the shoe release: "As part of the customize platform, the Converse Custom X Grotesk Chuck ’70 High Top features two fresh patterns created for Converse using 12 ounce canvas. In addition to the two exclusive prints in two different colors, there are also three solid color options in canvas, each with an exclusive Grotesk insole." You can design your own limited-edition Converse Custom X Grotesk Chuck ’70 sneakers at the Converse SoHo (NYC) and Lovejoy (Boston) locations and on Converse.com.
As for the "Darwin Was a Baller" installation, those of you who have followed Juxtapoz for years know that Grotesk is the artist behind our Times Square Newsstand project we did with Victory Journal. He is one of the best artists we know who can take an illustration and make it become something physical and full of life. We have loved following Grotesk Instagram account and his incredible "Overheard" cartoon series, and yet we are fascinated by his evolution into his new works of primitive creature styles in both drawings and now full-interactive installation work. As if Saul Steinberg went into a future primitive time-warp, Grotesk has taken his appreciation for design, typography, hip-hop, sports, cartooning, and fine art history and made a style completely his own. Even the name of the installation, "Darwin Was a Baller," speaks to the practice that Grotesk has made for himself; humor and movement, art and history.
The Converse Custom X Grotesk Chuck ’70 High Top is available at Converse’s SoHo, NYC and Lovejoy, Boston locations and on Converse.com.
Grotesk meet n' greet at Converse Soho, 560 Broadway, Thursday, March 16 from 5—7pm.
