Louise Despont's intensely intricate graphite illustrations are created on delicate sheets of antique ledger paper, similar to those that turn-of-the-century organizations used for their accounting. Despont takes these mundane parchments and draws mysterious, graphite designs onto them, similar to renderings of architectural plans or portraits of deities, with an Art Deco aesthetic. The overall muted pattern works by this Brooklyn based artist are meticulously meditative and alluring.

"Despont traces a wide-ranging continuum between ancient zodiac structures, early modes of navigation, divination techniques of geomancy and gravitational influences of both the sun and moon. The myriad of relationships drawn place emphasis on the historical use of synchronous systems to understand our world and the cultural influences these systems have had on language, calendars, art, music and mythology." - Nichelle Beauchene Gallery
