Drawings and Paintings by Lily Mae Martin

'As an artist my main point of interest is people. i draw most of my influences from random happenings and experiences I have had with people around me. My work is often described as grotesque, dark, or aggressive, which isn't what I intended but I find it interesting that people have that reaction. My drawing style stems form my interest in anatomy; drawing as a technique and finding a different way to capture people. In our image-saturated society people are obsessed with looking sexy or beautiful, particularly in photographs. I think this obsession comes from some kind of human need for validation. If people feel that they look desirable then everything's okay with the world. But it isn't. we have so many people obsessed with being the Aphrodite. It takes all types to make a world, and we don't seem to be living in a culture that can accept this.' - Lily Mae Martin in the February, 2010 issue of Juxtapoz Magazine
