David Choe "SNOWMAN MONKEY BBQ" @ Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City

Aug 17, 2013 - Oct 27, 2013Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City

After almost four years away from galleries and museums, August 2013 cover artist David Choe presents a new solo show in Mexico City at Museo Universitario del Chopo. SNOWMAN MONKEY BBQ will include a whole new series of oil painting, drawing, watercolor and installation. The name of the exhibition takes inspiration from the words that Chinese gamblers scream in casinos: SNOWMAN refers to 8 card (because of the shape) MONKEY refers to face cards and BBQ means the player is one card away from winning. David interprets these words as agents that snap mental states and emotions while overcoming the language barrier.

He compares this feeling with an experience he had a few years ago during a ceremony with the Kogui Indians’ in Colombia, in which he experienced images, symbols and vibrant colors with no immediate significance. It was only after some time had passed that he grasped the full message. For David this was a life-changing experience that helped him develop a new sensory perception that reflects on a new vibrating color palette.

SNOWMAN MONKEY BBQ provides a full range of raw emotions detached from ordinary mental process in a way that the spectator can integrate and appropriate them.

From David:

Snowman Monkey BBQ is my first art exhibition in almost 4 years. why haven't i shown in so long? I been percolatin' i was busy destroying myself like any decent artist. 4 years of falling deep into addiction, heartbreak, rejoicing, discovery, recovery, hallucinogenics, worship and ignorant idiotic prophecies manifest and explode into a strange reality that I myself can't comprehend, it will encompass murals, sculptures, watercolors, oil, mixed media and if you're lucky and I'm fucked off this mezcal , maybe some performance art too! It is an honor to display my work in one of my most favorite places in the world , Mexico City! (I'm eating a sweetbread taco and typing this with one hand right now) at the Museo Universitario del Chopo. If you're in town saturday , august 17th come check it out . I'll make it worth your while...
