Following the release of an open edition print by Yoshitomo Nara titled Marching on a Butterbur Leaf back in Oct 2019, Dallas Contemporary has once again collaborated with Nara and today released a new print by the Juxtapoz favorite. The release of Real One, a never-before-seen 25 x 29 inches print will be benefiting the museum in advance of the artist’s career survey at the museum slated to open on January 30, 2021. The print launched on the museum’s new online store on 19th August at 12.00pm CDT.

Nara posters3Cultural institutions worldwide are among the many sectors to suffer consequences of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As far back as May, UNESCO and the International Council of Museums reported that nearly 13% of museums around the world, an estimated 1 in 8, may never reopen due to Covid 19. A huge decline in international tourism, the leading source of financial support, in concert with less donor support, has accounted for a  decimation of museums budgets, so with this in mind, Dallas Contemporary launched #DCfromhome in March, offering a series of digital conversations, programs, and educational resources available free of charge during the temporary closure. Continuing such efforts, the museum plans to launch new video works, available on the website, as well as a new e-commerce platform with books, prints, and plates by artists like Yoshitomo Nara, Richard Phillips, and Shephard Fairey. Proceeds from the e-shop will also benefit the museum and support continued free admission.

The show goes on (!) as the museum plans to reopen to the public on January 30th, 2021, beginning with a series of exhibitions, including this major solo show by Nara. Originally scheduled for this fall, the presentation curated by Adjunct Curator, Pedro Alonzo, will bring together a large selection of works from 2006, with new works to be exhibited for the first time.  Alongside, Dallas Contemporary will host a showcase by Austin based artist Ariel René Jackson, debuting a new video piece,  Italian photographer Paolo Roversi ’s first US solo museum exhibition titled Birds, which focuses on his relationship with fashion designer Rei Kawakubo; and Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong’s Borders, a series of new paintings and footage created at the US—Mexico border. —Sasha Bogojev
