Sam Friedman recently teamed with Louis Buhl & Co. for Beach Monoprints No. 3, a unique limited edition release. Diving deeper into his signature visuals and Beach Paintings Series, the February 2015-featured artist's unique monoprints will be available through louisbuhl.com on Thursday, July 11th at 12 pm EST.

Working within an intimate visual language, Friedman roams the canvas freely while executing brush strokes with utmost precision, as he fashions enticing, semi-abstract landscapes that have become his most recognizable motifs. Inspired by the experience of walking into the sunset during an oncoming storm, these colorful images play endlessly in a vibrant interplay of plants, setting sun, and light reflections on the water's surface. Minimalizing these visions to pure abstraction, the forms range from archetypal setting sun to transcendent compositions.

"For this monoprint series, we made sure to avoid any digitizing or using a computer altogether. Instead, I painted elements directly onto sheets of acetate, with black acrylic paint. These acetates were used to burn the screens. From there, I worked one on one with the printers. We built each composition up layer by layer, with no preconceived plans for color or composition; decisions that varied from one piece to the next. It was the most painting-like experience that I ever had while printing." – Sam Friedman

The monoprint technique allows the artist to create a single copy of each image, so the entire Beach Monoprints No. 3 series actually consists of 33 unique, original works, produced using hand-pulled screenprint technique on Mohawk Superfine UltraWhite 160 lb cover paper with deckled edges, containing between 5 to 8 multi-colored split fountains and upwards of 8 to 12 additional color layers. Measuring 30 x 22 in (76.2h x 55.88w cm) each of 33 unique examples is numbered and signed by the artist.––Sasha Bogojev
