I was born and raised in India, and as a young girl I quickly realized my body, my actions and my thoughts were public domain; to be judged under a microscopic lens. I moved to the U.S. at 18 and slowly began to claim my privacy, sense of self and womanhood. It wasn’t immediate. At first, I successfully emulated an immigrant’s American dream, spending a few years working in Silicon Valley at various technology start-ups. Over time, I chipped away at the social constructs and ingrained limitations of my cultural upbringing that led me to believe that being an artist was unimaginable. I started painting relentlessly. I painted to unveil the journey of the woman I was not permitted to be, the woman I am, and the woman I want to be.
My work is an examination of my own experiences being an Indian/Immigrant/Other/American/Woman/Artist and navigating this multiplicity of identities. My story is also that of a fractured identity caught between two contrasting worlds, America and India, and belonging in neither. I am fascinated by how a woman’s outer world—built by her history, cultural context and sociopolitical environment—shapes her inner world. I am motivated by depicting raw and honest portrayals of women and their internal mindscapes while deconstructing the myths surrounding the role of women. Ironically, my work reveals what I have spent years trying to reclaim from the public sphere—private, sacred moments born from the intersection of memory, history, identity and influenced by contemporary experiences and environments. —Anoushka Mirchandani
