We continue to showcase some of the artists of our summer release, Juxtapoz Black & White, the newest book in our ongoing series with Gingko Press. The new title features 28 contemporary artists who either work primarily in black and white or have created long-lasting projects in the spectrum, such as David Shrigley, Lucy McLauchlanGeoff McFetridge and Katy Ann Gilmore. This past week we have shown you works from Aakash Nihalani,Mrzyk & Moriceau and Cleon Peterson, and today we look at NYC-based installation, painter and performance artist, Shantell Martin

Even since we finished this book, Shantell has made an even BIGGER name for herself with a massive project with the NYC Ballet. From exhibitions in San Francisco with Chandran Gallery, to mural projects and lectures, Martin's freestyling nature is both majestic and immersive. Often times you feel as if you are walking into her world. As her bio notes, "With a meditative process defined by an uninhibited flow, her compositions embody her internal state and the impermanence of the world around her."

As Shantell wrote in the Juxtapoz Black & White book, "Black and white is calming, it's something that is accessible to all, something that we all have experienced in some way, somewhere along the line. With color, you can, in a way, be manipulated, told where to look, your brain will lead you to certain colors first, and then you kinda get it. With black-and-white work, you are not telling the audience where to start, and there is a space for discovery and rediscovery; seeing new things each time you look."
