We are continuing our series of previews and excerpts from our newest book, Juxtapoz Black & White. All month we have beenshowing different artists from the 224-page collection, and today we have a look at the works of Frankfurt, Germany's Kaethe Butcher, an artist who balances illustrative works with commissioned projects and gifs.

"I think the balancing act for my color works, and the black-and-white work is maybe for my soul. I guess it's important that I can go both ways and that there's not only the option of black and white for me (and my skills, ha ha). In the beginning, I really thought that I could only use colors for my doodle style. It came to my mind very late to combine colors with my black-and-white work. Yes, I am slow. Watercolors are a nice medium to enjoy a mix of soft and vivid colors and make floral pattern designs. It fits my pencil lines as well. To be honest, I mostly use color in a more decorative way. There's no crazy good meaning behind my choice of color; it's more intuitive. I recently started lino printing and I started to think more about which color I should use for this or that linocut." —Kaethe Butcher
