Today, May 8th, 2015 Ever Gold Gallery in San Francisco will present Let’s Go All The Way, an exhibition of new textile works by Ben Venom. Working with repurposed materials, Venom combines the often menacing and combative countercultural imagery of biker gangs, metal music and the occult with the comforts of domesticity in a series of quilts and textile-based works. Through this collision of traditional quilting techniques and aesthetics tied to the fringes of society, Venom re-envisions the narrative of contemporary materials and examines the possibility for a new interpretation of American folk craft.
In this new body of work, Venom includes an experimental selection of materials, incorporating goatskin, bandanas, and canvas alongside his staple heavy metal t-shirts. Soaring eagles, charging tigers, and bloodstained knives confront the viewer in five large works, pushing these over-the-top icons and themes into a larger than life experience. Works like Once Bitten Twice Shy playfully reference 1980s metal culture with its white denim and leather construction, while Iron Fist places viewers face to face with predatory forces. It’s time to place your bets… Aces High!
