16mm Film Quilts by Sabrina Gschwandtner

March 12, 2013

New York-based visual artist and writer Sabrina Gschwandtner has taken recently de-accessioned 16 mm film of early Feminist documentaries from the Fashion Institute of Technology and sewn them together with her own personal film footage, mimicking popular American quilt motifs such as log cabin squares, octagonal stars, and 'string quilts.' The films, "educational documentaries, dated 1952 - 1982 focused on textile crafts such as crocheting, knitting, sewing, fabric dyeing, and quilting, and celebrated the women who made them."
