With their long time focus on books, especially unique examples of work personalized by artists and writers, the organizers from Harper's Books thought of an exhibition of works created on hotel stationary paper. Ranging in styles and techniques used, some of the featured artists include an A-list of Juxtapoz favorites: Morgan Blair<\/a>, Brian Calvin<\/a>, Kim Dorland, Emily Mae Smith<\/a>, Ed Templeton<\/a>, Marcel Dzama<\/a> (cover artist issue n193<\/a>), Todd Bienvenu, Josh Jefferson<\/a> (editor of the Juxtapoz Saturday School series<\/a>), Kamijo Susumu, Alex Bierk, Stacy Leigh, Ryan McGinness<\/a> (cover artist issue n173), Josh Reames<\/a>, Guy Yanai<\/a> and many more. Using painting as their primary tool and voice of expression, the artist in Engender<\/em> are deconstructing and rewriting conventional notions of personal identity through their work. Putting traditional and figurative abstraction as the foundation for more fluid and inclusive expressions of identity, these new view points are set from a variety of different cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds. The title of the show suggest the play with the various meanings of the words \"generate\u201d and \u201cgender\u201d and how contemporary interpretations of the topic can be produced based on different standpoints.The artists in Engender<\/em> tread the line between traditional and figurative abstraction and include the likes of October 2016 cover artist Nicole Eisenman<\/a>, Emily Mae Smith<\/a>, Loie Hollowell, Hernan Bas, Firelei Baez, Christina Quarles, Tschabalala Self, and past featured artist Nathaniel Mary Quinn<\/a>, among others. \u2014Sasha Bogojev

Through this show, the New York-based artist presented the diverse strategies and visual languages she's skillfully utilizing in her work. Aiming to present the complexity of the time we're living in, her paintings are strongly influenced by neo-classical and symbolist works, meticulously rendered in oil. While some of the pieces are playing with the format of the painting itself (observing subconsciousness or sampling familiar visuals from famous paintings or even video games), the majority of work focused on presenting women's identity.

Confronting the traditional representation of women as either a muse or as a femme fatale, Smith's recurring \u201cbroom lady\u201d or \"lady with glasses\" characters are surreal, anthropomorphic figures open for complex narratives and internal dialogues. Including subtle references to classic art, popular culture, science, social critique, symbolism and dry humor, these rich paintings carry complex storylines beneath the beautifully composed and masterly executed images.

Inspired by the fictional \u201cbrain planet\u201d from Stanislaw Lem\u2019s book Solaris<\/em>, the artists created a whole new body of work and transformed the exhibition space into a peculiar alien terrain for this showcase. The leading idea was to present the act of painting as a medium of communication, regardless of its formal appearance, while utilizing Lem's overview of the relationship between anatomy and consciousness. With this showcase the artists wanted to question authorship and authority of knowledge, referring to the idea that every change in science comes from pseudo science or a spiritual belief. The planet itself has been used as a metaphor for the mental concept of painting as a highly unstable and open-ended process, which is further backed up by Lem's commitment to scientific accuracy and existential considerations. With this in mind Smith and Henry decided to join their artistic forces and instead of presenting their individual artistic styles, merge them into a new, third entity. Mixing Smith's hyper real figurative vocabulary and Henry's abstract color investigations, they've created a unique aesthetic which hardly falls into any common painting categorization. This fusion was further accented through effective floor installation that divided the space in black and white parts which eventually blurred into each other. \u2014Sasha The show features 6 brand new oils on linen ranging from 14 x 11 in, to one of her biggest works to date, \"Rogue Wave\", measuring impressive 72 x 98 in. Installed within gallery's white cube space in chic neighborhood of Ch\u00e2telain, the works show her wide sources of influences, but also, her meticulous paintings skills. Using softness of oil as a medium, the works have a strong feel of retro airbrush or sci-fi art due to smooth use of gradients and transparency. In combination with sharp forms and strict compositions, they are very recognizable and unique in their aesthetics and imagery used. Humorous and exuberant, but somewhat dark and mysterious, they capture visitor's attention with their unpredictableness and unrestricted playfulness. Round glasses, sharp hairdos, brooms\/brushes, mustache, guns, water drops and hooks, are some of the recurring images we've seen previously in works by Austin-born artist. With her new body of work, Emily Mae Smith brings most of these elements back, but in different interactions and telling different stories. Though very pop-art at first, her meticulously rendered oils feature strong surrealist and even Disney-like iconography. But behind the rich layers of vibrant colors and sharp imagery, visual wit and dark humor reveals her cheeky commentary on issues like gender, capitalism and violence. Unusual mixture of cartoon-like elements against photo realistic imagery and even digital graphic effects, creates an unique aesthetic wrapped in carefully constructed and strict compositions. Her Brussels debut is titled after Christopher Priest\u2019s 1995 novel \"The Prestige\" in which Nikola Tesla builds a flawed teleportation machine that merely creates a duplicate of the original item or person. For this show Smith painted a new series of recognizable female portraits that are her vision of such accidental duplicate mistakes. Stripped of any recognizable features, they are representing women whose \"interiority, subjectivity, and psychology is completely absent as a visual language in western culture.\u201d -Sasha Bogojev<\/p>\r\n
